Delta Air Lines and Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet signed U.S.-Canadian transborder joint venturetoday. The combined transborder service of the two carriers will connect over 30 cities and cover approximately 95 percent of transborder demand.
・WestJet serves 27 U.S. cities with 500 weekly flights
・Delta serves 10 Canadian cities with 540 weekly flights
In December 2017, the two carriers signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding of their intent to form a joint venture. Delta and WestJet still need regulatory approvals in both Canada and the U.S. before the two carriers can formally begin planning enhanced benefits:
- Expanded codesharing
- Closely aligned frequent flyer programs
- Reciprocal elite benefits
- Joint growth across transborder networks
- Co-location of gates at key hubs
The joint venture agreement will also allow the two carriers to coordinate cargo on scheduled passenger flights and work closely on lucrative corporate contracts.
